New Number, Port Your Number, Keep Your Provider or LUIXER Edge: Which Setup Fits Your Business?

Four ways to connect a business phone number to an AI Employee — and one of them is 'change nothing'. What each involves, what it costs you in disruption, and why portability is a per-number question.

The thing that stops most businesses adopting an AI phone system is not the AI. It is the phone number.

That number is on your signage, your vehicles, your listings, ten years of invoices and whatever Google has cached. The prospect of moving it — and of a week where the phones do something unpredictable — is enough to make "we'll look at it next quarter" the safe answer indefinitely.

So it is worth knowing that moving your number is one of four options, and often the wrong one.

Option 1: Get a new number

What it is: we supply a number in your market and it points at your AI Employee from day one.

What it involves: choosing from what is genuinely available where you are. Number types differ by country — a local number for a specific city, a national number, a toll-free number — and what exists in your market is a real question with a real answer, checked at the moment you ask rather than read off a list somebody wrote down last year.

Fits when: you are opening a new location or line of business; you want a dedicated number for a campaign so you can see exactly what it produced; or you want to run AI on a new number for a month before it goes anywhere near your main line.

The catch: you have to tell people about it. A new number with no traffic proves nothing, so most businesses forward some existing traffic to it or advertise it deliberately.

Underrated as a first step. It is the lowest-risk way to find out whether this works for you, because nothing existing changes.

Option 2: Bring your existing number across

What it is: porting. Your number moves to LUIXER and your customers notice nothing.

What it involves: a check for that specific number, a set of documents that varies by country and by carrier, and a switchover.

Fits when: the number is genuinely load-bearing — on signage, on vehicles, in listings you cannot easily update — and changing it would cost you more than the migration.

The catch, and it is the important one in this article:

Portability is decided per number, not per country.

This gets misrepresented constantly, so it is worth being blunt. A vendor telling you "we support porting in the UAE" has told you almost nothing about your number. Portability depends on the specific number: who currently holds it, what type it is, what it is attached to, and sometimes on account details you have forgotten about.

A number in a well-served market can be non-portable. A market with no direct numbers available can still be perfectly reachable through options 3 and 4.

Any vendor who answers "can I port my number?" with a country name rather than a check on the actual number is guessing. Give them the number and ask again.

Option 3: Keep your current phone provider

What it is: your phone service stays exactly where it is, under your existing contract, and LUIXER connects to it.

What it involves: the least of all four. Nothing moves. No number changes hands. No contract is cancelled. Your provider carries on doing what it does, and calls reach your AI Employees through a connection between the two.

Fits when: you are mid-contract; your provider does something specific that you need; you have negotiated rates you would rather keep; or — most commonly — you simply do not want a telecoms project stacked on top of an AI project.

The catch: your provider needs to support a connection of this kind. Most business-grade providers do. It is confirmed with you before anything is set up, so you are not finding out mid-migration.

This is the option people forget exists, and it is often the right one. There is no rule that says adopting AI requires changing who carries your calls.

Option 4: Connect with LUIXER Edge

What it is: connecting the phone system or business line you already run on your own premises.

What it involves: LUIXER Edge sits between what you already have and the AI Employees, so calls can reach them without your internal network being exposed to the internet.

Fits when: you have equipment in the building that is not going anywhere; you have network isolation or data-locality requirements; or a regulator has opinions about where call handling happens.

The catch: Edge is set up with us rather than switched on from a settings page, and it is not included in any published plan. If your situation calls for it, that conversation happens early, because it shapes everything else.

Choosing between them

A rough decision path:

  1. Is your number genuinely irreplaceable? No → get a new number. That is the fastest, lowest-risk start.
  2. Yes, and are you mid-contract or happy with your provider? → keep your provider. Nothing changes.
  3. Yes, and do you want to consolidate onto one system? → port the number, after checking that specific number.
  4. Do you have equipment on site or isolation requirements? → Edge, and let that conversation come first.

Most small and mid-sized businesses land on 1 or 2. Porting is common but rarely urgent, and it is usually better done after you know the AI Employee is worth building your telephony around — not as a prerequisite for finding out.

Questions worth asking any vendor

  • Can I keep my current phone provider? (If the answer is no, ask why not.)
  • Can you check portability for this specific number, not for my country?
  • What documents will I need, and where does that requirement come from?
  • What happens on switchover day, and what is the rollback if it goes wrong?
  • If I start on a new number and want to port later, is that painful?
  • Is any of this bundled into the subscription, or billed separately?

The answers tell you a lot about whether you are talking to a phone system or to an AI product with a number attached.

One thing nobody should promise you

Be sceptical of a published country list presented as coverage. Availability changes, number types differ within a country, and portability is per number regardless. A list is easy to publish and goes stale silently — which is exactly why we do not publish one. We would rather check your actual number and give you a real answer.
